Until two decades ago, the Aral Sea was the fourth largest inland body of water on the planet and supported one of the world's most productive fisheries, supplying an incredible one-quarter of the Soviet Union's catch with over two dozen species of fish. Because of increasing demands on the two feeder rivers of the sea, the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, fewer and fewer cubic kilometers of water made it to the their final destination each year.....
