Regardless of what some imagery in U.S. popular culture would lead you to believe, Native Americans are not merely a thing of the past. They are neither extinct nor going about their business in loincloths and feathered headdresses. Native Americans form an important part of the rich tapestry of American society. There are hundreds of tribal nations in the contiguous U.S. alone, and hundreds more in Alaska and Canada.
