How Do You Write a Term Paper

Thursday, Jul. 15th 2010

Writing a term paper is a requirement at every point in academic career. Sooner or later you will be asked to submit a term paper at the end of the semester which adds to your final grade. This is why during crunch time students go around asking “how do you write a term paper”?

A term paper is basically a research oriented report that’s limited to a course studied during the academic year. Since examiners and professors give it high weightage, students tend to get pressurized and many times lose focus and direction. In some cases they make a complete mess of things as they forget there is a method and format to write a term paper. The tips below will prove useful if you have to write a term paper for your final grade.

Step 1

In-case a topic has not been assigned to you, choose one for your term paper that interests you and is broad enough to thoroughly research and expand.

Step 2

Once you have chosen a topic, conduct some preliminary research to help you in deciding a thesis statement. A thesis statement is usually one sentence that serves as the premise for an entire argument which is necessary if you have to write a term paper. This should be part of your introduction paragraph where you should explain the purpose of this term paper and elaborate the thesis statement.

Step 3

After carefully devising a thesis statement, begin conducting all kinds of primary and secondary research. Dig through articles, browse through websites, read newspapers, filter through notes and lectures. This research should be included in the body paragraphs. Provide relevant information which can take the form of graphics, illustrations and charts.

Step 4

It is time for the paragraph that holds the conclusion. The earlier paragraphs should lead up to this point where you basically reiterate your thesis statement and summarize the analysis in light of the topic. A persuasive tone is preferred.

Step 5

Provide a comprehensive list of references to authenticate all the supporting evidence used. This reflects well on your work ethic and attention to detail.

Step 6

Include an appendix where you can add any supplemental data such as charts and graphs to further add value to your term paper.

Step 7

Before submitting your term paper, re-read it with a fresh pair of eyes to ensure there are no fluency and grammatical issues.

Hopefully the next time you ask yourself “how do you write a term paper”, you’ll have this article to guide you.
